Nonlinear elasto-plastic model for dense granular flow

چکیده

This work proposes a model for granular deformation that predicts the stress and velocity profiles in well-developed dense granular flows. Recent models for granular elasticity (Jiang and Liu 2003) and rate-sensitive plastic flow (Jop et al. 2006) are combined into one universal granular continuum law, capable of predicting flowing regions and stagnant zones simultaneously in any arbitrary 3D flow geometry. The unification is performed by motivating and implementing a Kröner-Lee elastoplastic decomposition, with care taken to ensure certain continuum physical principles are necessarily upheld. The model is then numerically implemented in multiple geometries and results are compared to experiments and discrete simulations.

About contacts of adhesive, elasto-plastic, frictional powders

Granular materials can be studied in a split-bottom ring shear cell geometry, where they show wide shear bands under slow, quasi-static, large deformation. The contact models are at the basis of their interesting collective behavior and flow-rheology as well the core ingredient for the discrete element method (DEM). The contact mechanics used involves elasto-plastic, viscous, frictional, and to...

Wave propagation in elasto-plastic granular systems

Due to the nonlinear nature of the inter-particle contact, granular chains made of elastic spheres are known to transmit solitary waves under impulse loading. However, the localized contact between spherical granules leads to stress concentration, resulting in plastic behavior even for small forces. In this work, we investigate the effects of plasticity in wave propagation in elasto-plastic gra...

Non-local rheology in dense granular flows: Revisiting the concept of fluidity.

The aim of this article is to discuss the concepts of non-local rheology and fluidity, recently introduced to describe dense granular flows. We review and compare various approaches based on different constitutive relations and choices for the fluidity parameter, focusing on the kinetic elasto-plastic model introduced by Bocquet et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett 103, 036001 (2009)) for soft matter, and a...

A new constitutive law for dense granular flows

In many geophysical or industrial applications involving flows of grains, a continuum description would be of considerable help, for example in predicting natural hazards or in designing industrial processes. However, constitutive equations for dry granular flows are still matter of debates 1-10. One difficulty is that grains can behave like a solid (in a sand pile), a liquid (when poured from ...

Applying GSH to a wide range of experiments in granular media.

Granular solid hydrodynamics (GSH) is a continuum-mechanical theory for granular media, whose wide range of applicability is shown in this paper. Simple, frequently analytic solutions are related to classic observations at different shear rates, including: i) static stress distribution, clogging; ii) elasto-plastic motion: loading and unloading, approach to the critical state, angle of stabilit...
